An early Mockingbird special benefit for groups of 10 or more. Tickets go on sale for the 22nd annual theatrical production of Christopher Sergel’s “To Kill A Mockingbird,” presented by the all-local Mockingbird Players. Tickets are $35 each, except on May 12th, which are $75 each and include an exclusive reception, “Evening with the Mockingbird Stars” following the performance. Dates of performances: April 19, 20, 21, 22, 26, 27, 28, 29. May 4, 5, 6, 10, 11, 12, 18, 19. Tickets may be purchased by telephone or in person only. Eleventh Annual Genealogy Workshop

Monroe County Heritage Museum will host its 11th annual Genealogy Workshop at the Old Courthouse Museum on Saturday, February 4, 2012. Sign-in & introductions at 8:30 am, program ends at 3:00 pm. Dr. Gregory A. Waselkov, Director of the Center for Archaeological Studies at the University of South Alabama and Elizabeth D. Wells, Special Collections Librarian at Samford University, will speak at the Museum. A box lunch will be served at the Old Masonic Lodge in Perdue Hill, where Margo Stringfield, Research Associate with the Archaelology Institute at the University of West Florida will speak. Weather permitting, the day will end with a visit to a nearby archaelogical dig and/or local cemetery of interest. $30.00 fee includes box lunch. Pre-registration deadline is 4:00 pm on Feb. 1st. Enjoy a day of immersion into the historical surroundings associated with the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. Guests will have the opportunity for a guided tour of exhibits in the Old Courthouse Museum - “Old Courthouse: Heart of the Community”; “Harper Lee: In Her Own Words”; “Truman Capote: A Childhood in Monroeville”; Probate Judge Millsap’s Office; The 1930’s Law Office, the original courtroom restored to its 1930s appearance and the Atticus Finch marker. Primarily designed for students studying the novel or Alabama history. Groups must call ahead. The May 11th program will feature Mary Badham, the actress who played Scout in the film. Rikard's Mill Annual Reopening

The annual reopening of Rikard’s Mill features the gristmill turning out meal and grits again as it has done since Jake Rikard first established a gristmill on Flat Creek in 1845. Scenes and Stories of Monroeville: A To Kill a Mockingbird Workshop

Celebrate America’s most beloved novel, while you spend a morning in the Old Courthouse as the citizens of Monroeville share their life stories to help teachers and readers of To Kill a Mockingbird understand the connections between Harper Lee’s hometown of Monroeville and the fictional Maycomb of Lee’s novel. This program is open to the public as well as teachers.

Learn more about Monroe County’s historic places. This workshop includes an air-conditioned bus tour of historic sites in Monroe County- a county that’s older than the state of Alabama. Attendees will learn about historical events and sites that focus on early Alabama history, including the Indian Territory era, pioneer settlement, the significance of the Federal Road, mill towns, and steamboat traffic on the Alabama River. The workshop will give teachers and history enthusiasts a chance to tour sites that are not accessible to the public. Teachers are given first priority, but the general public is also invited. Join in the fun with a pumpkin toss, pumpkin painting and pumpkin relay race before gathering around a bonfire to listen to spine-chilling ghost stories from the area. The Haunted Swamp Trail will be open for those brave enough to wander its scary paths, where you may well see ghosts of Native American Indians, Confederate soldiers and even the Headless Horseman of Gin House Bottom! This is a unique opportunity for students and adults alike to see demonstrations of skills and crafts from the past, such as blacksmithing, mules grinding sugar cane, and corn milling at the 1845 water-powered grist mill.
